The National Federation of the Blind of Georgia Annual State Convention is an ever growing gathering of blind people, with a program agenda that serves to educate and empower.  Each year blind persons, their family members, blindness professionals, service providers, and other interested individuals have the opportunity to network and exchange information and ideas.  Attendees meet and talk with many blind people who are successfully functioning in many occupations and professions.  State and Federal administrators, elected officials, and the makers and distributors of new technology attend the NFBGA convention.  Above all, a broad cross section of the most active segment of the blind population are present to discuss common problems and plan for concerted action.

“Becoming the Change We Want the World to See”

The theme, “Becoming the Change We Want the World to See“ has special meaning as our affiliate continues to develop programs and services to meet the specific needs of blind people having the desire to be truly independent.  We want the world to see blind people as viable contributing members of society, not beneficiaries of the public good will.  Therefore, we start with ourselves and work to infuse in every blind person the five essential elements of success:

1) Realize that it is OK to be blind

2) Master the alternative skills of blindness

3) Cope with public attitudes about blindness

4) Blend in with the rest of society

5) Give back to others

We realize that the real problem of blindness is not the loss of eyesight.  The real problem is the misunderstanding and lack of information that exist.  We must work to solve the problem, and become the change that we want the world to see.
