A
Possibilities Fair for Seniors
Who
Are Losing Vision and for Their Families.
Friday, October 3, 2008
1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Admission: $5.00
per person
Each fall, more than 350 seniors who are losing vision
attend the annual Possibilities Fair for seniors held at the National
Federation of the Blind Jernigan Institute in
Americans are living longer, and vision loss occurs more
frequently among those who are older.
More than 50 percent of the 70,000 individuals who become blind in this
country each year are over the age of sixty-five, and this population is
expected to more than double by the year 2030. Yet less financial resources and fewer
services are available to those over fifty-five losing vision than younger
blind people.
With the right tools, technology, and support, many people
who experience loss of vision as they age can learn to accommodate for that
loss and continue to live productive, meaningful lives.
Seniors will gain knowledge through an assortment of
National Federation of the Blind demonstration tables, And a range of training
on nonvisual techniques and a glimpse at the wide variety of technology that is
available today to support seniors with low vision, including the latest in
assistive enlargement technology.
NFB members will demonstrate adaptive aids and techniques
that can be utilized to help in the home to do everyday tasks. Such as
labeling, reading small print, notetaking, cooking, time management, sewing,
adaptive games and much much more.
Also, community organizations and governmental agencies in
attendance will share information about what social programs and services are
available for the blind and visually impaired and this much vital information
goes home with our visitors.
