The National Federation of the Blind is a non-profit
organization of blind persons whose purpose is to help blind persons achieve
self-confidence, self-respect, and independence; as well as acting as a vehicle
for collective self-expression for the blind community. Members strive to educate the public that the
blind are normal individuals who can compete on terms of equality.
We provide public education about blindness, information and
referral services, literature and publications about blindness, adaptive
equipment for the blind, advocacy services, job opportunities for the blind,
and support for blind persons and their families.
Who Are We?
The National
Federation of the Blind of Georgia (NFBGA) is an organization of people who are
blind improving the quality of life for all who are blind. The NFBGA possesses
the knowledge, skills and life experience that has made significant strides
toward making a positive difference in the future of all blind adults and
children.
The
NFBGA works actively to educate the community and advocate for the rights of
the blind of Georgia. The NFBGA
confronts the fears and stereotypes that result in the under education of
Georgia’s blind children, the under employment of more than 70 percent of blind
working-age adults, and the reduced quality of life for our ever-growing
population of older citizens who are blind.

Members
of the National Federation of the Blind are committed to participating actively
in the efforts of the organization to achieve equality, opportunity and
security for those who are blind.
NFBGA is an integral
part of the National Federation of the Blind and serves as a vehicle for
collective action by people who are blind.

Toward
that end, we:
·
Operate as a
mechanism through which the blind and interested sighted persons can come
together to plan and carry out programs to improve the quality of life of those
who are blind.
·
Provide a
means of collective action for parents of blind children by providing them a
form to benefit from the experiences of one another.
·
Promote the
interests of blind students by
encouraging an environment of peer support
·
Promote the
vocational, cultural, and social advancement of the blind with a variety of
outreach and education initiatives
·
Work to
achieve the integration of the blind into society on a leveled playing field
with the sighted by taking action which
will improve the overall condition and standard of living of the blind.
NFBGA was established in 1973, and became a chartered state
affiliate of the National Federation of the Blind in 1975. The national organization is composed of more
than 50 affiliates, with 700 local chapters, consisting of over 50 thousand
blind individuals.
